A 5 French Franc Note Which Sailed to Normandy on the D Day Landings. Multi Signed

Code: 57576
£250.00
Approx $312.50, €275.00, £250

A truly historical piece, this prewar 5 Franc French note sailed to France on D Day, 6th June 1944 and is covered in signatures collected from those on board on the day.

The reverse is headed in ink “Invasion of France. SS Thysville Belgique D Day 6/6/44”

The SS Thysville was a large Belgian ship that played a significant role in the D-Day landings. It was part of the Allied invasion force, transporting troops, equipment, and supplies to the beaches and sailed to Normandy on D-Day, June 6, 1944.

She was a depot ship and was primarily used for transporting cargo, supplies, and equipment that were essential for the invasion. She also played a role in re-positioning troops after the initial landings, which was crucial for consolidating the Allied foothold.

The note is in very good condition and although the signatures remain clear, they are typically hard to read, so further research is needed. Some can be determined, J H Noble “Doc”, J Plumbley, Barnett Chaplain and E L Chamberlin Leut. RNVR who survived being torpedoed in 1942.

Also difficult to make out is the signature of a Lt. in the RNVR who adds in bracket “Fibber”, which was the code word for the plan which was part of the deception operation to convince the Germans the landings would take place in the Pas de Calais.

A unique and fascination piece of history.
